music makes the people come together, yeah
I have to confess that I look down on memes and (except for the occasional thing like Which Golden Girl Are You?) never do them because they feel too easy, a brainless way to generate content. If I visit someone's blog or livejournal and it's got too many quizzes or Friday Fives on it I almost always immediately tune out and never return as I'd rather spend my time on someone who knows how to draw a picture instead of someone content to just play with a coloring book. That said, when Matt Haughey hands me the baton, who am I not to take it? So here we go:
Total volume of music on my computer:
18.49 GB, 4288 songs. That's 11.9 days worth of music and almost half my Powerbook's hard disk! There are a few old cds lying around the apartment and on the LaCie that I haven't gotten around to importing yet, probably another 2 or 3 gigs right there.
The last CD I bought:
I very rarely buy CDs because I get most music online (from the iTMS, friends and mp3 blogs) so this was pretty hard for me to answer. The Arcade Fire's Funeral, one of my three favorite albums released in 2004 (the other two being Ted Leo & The Pharmacists' Shake the Sheets and William Shatner's Has Been). Major thanks to Kathryn, who got me a ticket to see them live in February, it was one of the best shows I've ever seen in my life. If you get the chance to see them, don't blow it.
Song playing right now:
Amerie's excellent go go-influenced 1 Thing, super smooth and playful. Produced by Rich Harrison just like her previous effort, same guy behind Beyonce's Crazy In Love.
Five songs I listen to a lot, or that mean a lot to me:
Summertime, by The Sundays. I could tell you about the singer's unusually dreamy voice, or the weird rhythm she sings the lyrics to, making it nearly impossible to learn to sing along, but really I love this song because, as Kevin said, "nothing beats being young and in love when the weather is nice." I'm young and the weather is nice, two out of three ain't so bad, right?
You Wouldn't Like Me, by Tegan & Sara. I don't know that I'd be able to sit through an entire set of theirs because their voices would probably annoy me, but there are three songs on their album that I adore and this is the one I like best. The harmony is lovely, yes, but it's all about the painful honesty and sadness of "there's nothing to live for when I'm sleeping alone."
Heartbeat, by Annie. From Pitchfork's review of Anniemal: "The track itself narrates a party, drinks with friends, and the thrill of a first encounter-- all that many people want from a night out. It communicates a love for music, friendship, and connection, and celebrates the moments when all three merge perfectly. The track's rhythm is obviously supposed to mirror the song's title, and that could have been cloying or heavy-handed, but when that rhythm quickens and doubles its pace as Annie catches the eye of and moves to the beat with another partygoer, it becomes a deceptively simple and surprisingly beautiful articulation of basic human need, beautifully encapsulating every element of human excitement-- guilt, nerves, excitement, hope."
Brass in Pocket, by Pretenders. This is the song I sing in the shower most days, the one I can nail at karaoke every time cause I know it forwards and backwards from my heart. I love the naked confidence and wanting of it, the simple pop perfection.
The Holiday Song, by Frank Black. It took me a while before I could even pay attention to the words of this song, I just love the droll delivery with the jingly jangliness and horns so much.
Five people to whom I’m passing the baton:
Andrew, Caroline, Caterina (done!), Stuart, Yimay
