So I read this article about the new batch of MTV Philippines VJ wannabes with great interest because over a year ago I wrote about one of my pet peeves, skin whitening and the colonial mentality, pointing out how every single one of MTV Asia's Philippine VJs was a) mestizo, half-white but probably able to pass as white, b) not actually Filipino, and c) except for one, unable to speak Tagalog.
Out of this year's group of fourteen, four of them are Americans, one is Australian. Four are mestizo and nine are moreno. Only one guy, Johan Ekedum (from UP Diliman, go isko!), looks anything like most of the 80 million people in the country, with his dark skin and flat nose.
One out of fourteen! Say it with me, kids: what the fuck!
You've probably guessed by now that I'm rooting for Johan to win tomorrow, but I'm not holding my breath. As it is, I'd be pretty surprised if MTV Philippines breaks from tradition and decides not to pick foreigners to represent the country.
most of the MTV vjs in the past were either pretending to be pinoy (with their twangs) or denying they were pinoy (with their twangs) to get the job!
Patricia Benedicto is actually from Ilo-ilo, she also went to Pisay Diliman (go isko) and UP Visayas. But yeah right, she probably doesn't stand a chance against the more western-looking vj wannabes.
I'm not holding my breath either. The same thing goes for the PBA (okay, so they're unrelated). Most of those who makes it as a PBA-player are either half-breeds, people who deny their Filipino heritage, or just a bunch of wannabes.

when i went back 'home' christmas/ nye of 2002, i noticed the same thing about mtv philippines and, well, philippine/ filipino media in general-- everyone was westernized.
it kind of freaked me out.
